Digital marketing freelancing is a great way to grow your career. Digital marketing freelancing is an excellent path to take for career growth.
Looking for a digital marketing career without waiting for a company to hire you?
No need to have a fancy office.
It’s not necessary to have a large team.
And, don’t need to know it all in advance!
It takes only a useful skill, a little practice to use it confidently, a portfolio that is built up, and the courage to go at your first client.
This is where digital marketing freelancing becomes intriguing.
I think freelancing is more than just getting a job from clients and working from home. It’s a chance to apply all these things that you know – SEO, social media marketing, content creation, website marketing or online advertising – to actual business challenges.
If you are a small restaurant that is struggling to catch yourself in people’s attention on Instagram, you will need some help. A local company may require a more effective site. A web-based retailer could require SEO. You may need a person to handle the social media for your personal brand.
Each company can have its own issues.
And, this is not to say there’s a perfect recipe for every freelance digital marketer.
Let’s proceed step by step, starting from the first skill to master, to your first client and then to building your freelancing business into a business.
What Is Digital Marketing Freelancing?
Digital marketing freelancing is simply the act of providing digital marketing services to any company or individual without being hired to work as an employee for a particular company.
On the contrary, a freelancer works with various clients and provides services or projects as per their requirement while charging them accordingly.
For instance, a little restaurant that not only has delicious meals, but also offers virtually no visibility online.
Here are a few ways how a digital marketer can help:
- Creating Instagram posts
Managing social media accounts
Build the most effective Google Business Profile for the business.
Creating a basic website. - Writing website content
- Researching keywords
- Improving SEO
- Creating reels
Running Internet marketing campaigns
This is a project that the restaurant is paying for and the freelancer also gets experience and creates a portfolio for it.
This is the gist of it.
The best part?
Your next client does not have to be another restaurant.
This month you’ll work with a clothing store, next month a real estate business, and then a personal brand.
Your abilities remain constant. Problems in the business scenario alter.
What is the meaning of Digital Marketing in simple terms? What is Digital Marketing simply?
Let’s make Digital Marketing extremely easy.
Digital marketing is any form of promotion of a product, service, person or business using digital means.
Consider a typical day in your life.
You’re looking for something on Google.
A product video might catch your attention on YouTube.
While you’re scrolling Instagram, you come across a brand.
You click an ad and end up on a web site.
An offer may arrive through email.
Everything that is listed here can be a component of digital marketing.
Traditional marketing refers to the ways in which traditional marketing channels like newspapers, television, posters, banners, and other methods off the web are utilized.
Digital marketing is the marketing through the internet to people who are already online.
That’s why having an online presence is essential for businesses of nearly all sizes these days.
But having a digital presence isn’t enough.
The true challenge of the challenge is to get people thinking about doing something.
This may be a visit to a website, enquiry, phone call, booking, signup or a purchase.
A Digital Marketing Freelancer’s Job Description
This is where freelancing becomes more feasible.
Let’s say I’m employed at a small fashion company. For example, I have a small clothing line.
I would not go so far as to say:
“Let’s run advertisements.”
First, I’d like to know about the business.
I’d ask:
Who is most likely to be interested in your product or service?
Which products of the company is the company making the most profit?
What are your customers looking for?
Do you use Instagram?
Have you got a web site?
Do you receive traffic from Google?
What are your competition’s practices and procedures?
What’s stopping your customers from calling or making a purchase from you?
I’d only know which marketing activity makes sense, when I understand the business.
Instagram marketing might be the right place to start.
In some cases, SEO could bring better visibility over the long term.
The business may actually need a website first.
A landing page could also be a better option, depending on the goal.
Sometimes, the real problem isn’t getting more traffic. The website itself may need some work.
Good digital marketing isn’t about doing everything. It’s the right thing done for the right business.
There are a number of digital marketing services that you can provide as a freelancer.
The number of mistakes I see novices make is trying to provide 20 services at once.
SEO.
Google Ads.
Meta Ads.
Email marketing.
Web development.
Brand strategy.
Social media.
Copywriting.
All content gets uploaded to the website.
However, when a potential client asks the question, “Can you show me your results?”, the situation becomes apparent.
It is not necessary to offer every service.
Pick a handful of services you can do well.
1. Social Media Marketing
Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn are all platforms that can be used for social media marketing.
A freelancer job usually entails:
- Content planning
- Post creation
- Reels
- Captions
- Hashtag research
- Community engagement
- Content calendars
- Performance tracking
It’s not just about posting daily.
Good content should help promote the business.
2. Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
SEO can boost the visibility of a business on search engines.
A freelancer can work on:
- Keyword research
- On-page SEO
- Technical SEO
- Content optimization
- Internal linking
- Image optimization
- Local SEO
If I have a digital marketing website, I may use digital marketing freelancing, freelance digital marketing services and online marketing services as my target keywords.
However, ranking for a keyword is not the only thing.
A good page should answer the searcher’s question clearly.
Useful traffic is good traffic but relevant traffic is better.
3. Content Marketing
Not all web visitors are ready to buy products straight away.
Good content can help businesses to educate, answer questions, build trust and be memorable.
Content marketing as a freelance job includes:
- Blog articles
- Website copy
- Social media content
- Infographics
- Video ideas
- Email content
If you produce a useful blog post that is well-optimized and has relevant keywords, you can have visitors coming to you for a long time after the post was published.
It is for this reason I believe content is a valuable component of digital marketing.
Content is one of the reasons why I believe it’s an incredibly valuable aspect of digital marketing.
4. Website & Landing Page Services
Attention converts to action on a business’ website.
Depending on your skills, you can offer:
Business websites
Landing pages
Portfolio websites
Responsive design
Basic UI/UX
Website content
Basic SEO setup
It is not only the beauty of the website, it is also important.
It should be easy to understand, easy to navigate, mobile-friendly and should be centered around what the next step is for the visitor.
5. Paid Advertising
Businesses can target specific audiences with paid ads on platforms like Google Ads and Meta Ads.
This can be a great freelance task, however it also takes accountability.
If a client pays out actual dollars for advertising, you should know:
Campaign setup
Audience targeting
Budgeting
Tracking
Conversion measurement
Performance analysis
I would not advise you to go with paid advertising because it seems to be profitable.
Know it well before having to handle another’s advertising budget.
How to Begin a Digital Marketing Freelance Business from scratch?
If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t want to try to learn everything all at once.
I’d stick with the first one being straightforward.
Step 1: Select a Core Skill
First, select one area.
It could be:
SEO
Instagram marketing
Content marketing
Graphic design
Website creation
Copywriting
Analytics
Pick a subject you’re interested in.
You can grow your services subsequently.
Step 2: Learn the Fundamentals
Don’t rely on random little videos.
Utilize accurate learning materials, understand the basis, and of course, apply the knowledge.
If you are looking for SEO you can use official search documentation to gain an understanding of how search works.
Official business resources are great for social media advertising.
The key is that it’s not all about certificates.
It’s about applying knowledge and skills and doing the things you learned.
Step 3: Create Your Own Project
This is one of the crucial steps.
Rather, tell a potential client:
“Believe me, I’m a digital marketing expert.”
Show them.
Build something yourself.
Make a mini Website.
Improve its content.
Research keywords.
Create social media posts.Create social media posts.
Track traffic.
Study what works.
Make changes.
Record your findings.
You now have more of a value added addition to your resume than a sentence.
This gives you evidence of your work capacity.
Your own site can also become a useful case study.
The 4th step is creating a simple Portfolio.
No, you don’t have to have 100 clients to have a portfolio.
Two or three good sample projects can provide a positive outcome to show.
For each project, mind 3 things:
The Problem
What was lacking or what needed to be improved?
What I Did
What actions did you take?
The Result
What was different following your work?
This is far more than just writing:
I’m familiar with SEO, social media marketing, graphic design and Google Ads.
Show the work.
Explain the process.
Share the result.
Which Digital Marketing Skills are You going to Pick Up?
There’s no single, optimal digital marketing skill for everyone.
The right skill for you will depend on your interests and the kind of business that you are interested in working with.
Skill What It Helps With
On Page SEO Local indexability
Social Media Marketing – constructing and participating in online communities.
Content Marketing is focused on attracting and educating audiences.Content Marketing centres around attracting and educating audiences.
Graphic Design involves developing visual material.Graphic Design is developing visual material.
Web Design Building online presence
Google Ads – Paid search campaigns.
Meta Ads Social media advertising
Marketing Performance is the area of analytics that involves measuring the performance of marketing activities.
Customer communication via email.Email Marketing Communication to customers.
Copywriting – Converting attention into action.
Personally, I believe that analytics should get more attention.
You can receive likes for a beautiful Instagram post.
However, I would also like to learn:
Did anyone click?
Have they been to the website?
Have they gotten in touch with the company?
Did they make a purchase?
Numbers speak a story that likes don’t.
The Advanced Digital Marketing Course: Is it really necessary?
You can get some structure from a good course if you’re learning from scratch.
However, avoid selecting a course that just claims to be ‘Advanced Digital Marketing’.
Before joining, ask:
Are there any practical projects?
Does it teach SEO?
Including social media?
Does it make sense of analytics?
Could anybody say that it is advertising?
Will I have to work on real and/or realistic projects?
I will make something during the course?
A certificate will demonstrate that a course has been taken.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that it works for you to get results.
The combination of Skills + practice + portfolio + communication + results will get you further.
Once you become more proficient, you can expand your work into conversion optimization, analytics, marketing funnels, paid campaigns, automation, and more.
It’s during this time period that digital marketing shifts from just content production to grasping the full customer journey.
How to land your first freelance digital marketing job?
Let’s be honest.
Digital marketing learning is a comfortable process.
Returning someone’s call to pay you when you do something?
That is a whole other ball game. 😅
If I were going to find my first client, I would start in the area where I live.
Look at:
Small shops
Restaurants
Salons
Gyms
Real-estate businesses
Clinics
Freelancers
Coaches
Local service businesses
Just don’t look for businesses.
Search for problems.
Perhaps they have not posted on their Instagram in months.
Their website may not be modern or easy to use.
Another issue could be that they are not maintaining their Google Business Profile.
The content might also fail to explain what makes the business different.
Instead of saying:
I’m a digital marketer, Do you need my services?”
Start an appropriate conversation.
For example:
I’ve seen some positive reviews on your business and your Instagram is not consistently updated but had a couple of ideas that could make the page a bit more active and useful for potential customers.
This is a much more positive dialogue.
You don’t sell yourself.
You’re displaying that you have been attentive to their business.
Never give guarantees of an overnight success.
It is good to begin with something practical.
Build trust.
Let the work speak.
What is a Digital Marketing Freelancer’s earning potential?
There isn’t one fixed salary for a freelancer.
This is because freelance workers typically aren’t paid in the conventional way.
Income is based on:
Your skills
Experience
Services
Project size
Client type
Location
Results
Pricing model
A novice may want to get comfortable with smaller projects at first.
Later, you could do the following exercise:
Individual projects
Monthly retainers
Consulting
Marketing packages
Long-term client relationships
For instance, you may offer a monthly Instagram post package, which could include:
Content planning
Social media posts
Reels
Basic community management
Monthly performance reporting
Do not hurry to come up with the big price.
First become valuable. Then increase your price as your skills and results improve.
The most frequent errors that new digital marketing freelancers make.
Making all things possible with a little effort
A novice builds a web site containing 25 services.
SEO.
Google Ads.
Meta Ads.
Email marketing.
Web development.
Brand strategy.
Then the client asks:
“Could you demonstrate your work?”
Silence.
I’d prefer to sell three services that I know how to do well, than to sell twenty services that I don’t know.
Copying Other Agencies
You need not be like any other marketing agency.
Our solutions are innovative, result-driven and cutting edge digital solutions.”
Okay.
However, what does that mean to the customer?
Not much.
Talk like a human.
Describe your action.
Describe your target audience.
Show your work.
Show what changed.
That’s more convincing than a lot of impressive sounding words on a page.
